This policy applies to the mobile application Fingerspell — ASL Reader ("the app"), developed by Faruk Hankanoglu as part of an MSc research project at Atlantic Technological University, Ireland.
The app requests permission to use your device camera. This permission is used for one purpose only: to detect the position of your hand so the app can recognise American Sign Language fingerspelling letters in real time.
Camera frames are analysed on your device, moment to moment, and then discarded. Images are not saved to storage, not uploaded to any server, and not shared with any third party. No video or photographs are recorded at any point.
The app collects no personal data. Specifically, it does not collect names, email addresses, contact details, location data, device identifiers, usage analytics, or advertising identifiers. There are no user accounts and no sign-in.
Because no data is collected, no data is shared, sold, or transferred to any third party.
The app requires an internet connection the first time it runs, in order to download the hand-detection model files it needs to operate. These files are retrieved from Google's public MediaPipe content delivery network. No information about you is sent as part of this request beyond what any ordinary web request includes (such as your IP address, which is handled by Google under their own privacy policy).
After that first run, the app functions offline. Recognition itself never requires a network connection.
The app is suitable for general audiences and collects no data from anyone, including children under 13.
As no personal data is collected or stored, there is no personal data to access, correct, export, or delete. You may revoke camera permission at any time through your device settings; the app will simply stop recognising signs.
If this policy changes, the revised version will be published at this address with an updated date at the top.
